Affection
May 28 - June 28, 2015
Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by Sunyoung Seo. This is her third solo exhibition presented by Amos Eno Gallery, featuring mixed media works from her Affection series. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, May 29th from 6 - 8 pm at the gallery, suite 120 at The Loom, 1087 Flushing Avenue in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
A series of new paintings exhibits a translation of Seo's fabric sculptures to two-dimensional form. These works are part of an ongoing creative practice of representing the energy of the human spirit in an inanimate state. Affection focuses on the correlation between energy and physicality, representing affection as a living energy with a changing source. For humans, these changes result from social interactions, which can be identified as struggle. Seo's work invites the viewer to contemplate moments of struggle as necessary in the search for identity, as struggle regenerates the will to survive.
As Seo seeks to define what it means to be human, she delves into the subconscious to perform an abstract reflection. A whimsical color sense and imaginative approach to form result in a depiction of the human condition that is characteristic of the artist.
Sunyoung Seo received her MFA from C.W. Post in Long Island, N.Y. in 2009. She also attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, and studied toy design in 2010. Previously, she earned her BFA in Korea in 2003, and has exhibited extensively in the United States and Korea.
