Anthony Cuneo Paintings to Match Your Couch!
October 30 – November 23, 2014
South Darlington, 2014, oil and graphite on archival panel
Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present Paintings to Match Your Couch!, a solo exhibition of works by Anthony Cuneo. The exhibition will feature five triptychs in oil and graphite painted on archival panels. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, November 7th from 6 – 8pm at the gallery, suite 120 at The Loom, located at 1087 Flushing Avenue in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Fascinated by charged tensions between opposites—chaos and order, emotion and intellect, creation and decay—Cuneo uses bold colors, geometric motifs, and uneven textures of layered paint to celebrate the finger-painter in all of us.
In Paintings to Match Your Couch!, Cuneo sands and refinishes old works to integrate multiple generations of his process into new life. Each triptych suggests, “different answers to the nature of reality, or, at least, my experience of it.” Reveling in art as “play” and not as “work”, Cuneo experiments with alternating patterns of circles, hexagons, and gridded dots to find meaning through the basic act of image-making.
Born in Chicago and raised in the New York metro area, Anthony Cuneo has been ruined for productive activity since experiencing Picassoʼs “Woman in Front of a Mirror” in kindergarten. Though he tried the path of virtue and civic duty in legal studies at the University of Pennsylvania, he ended up with an M.F.A. in 1981 and a satisfying career as a painter and photographer. An accomplished educator, he enjoys “passing on his own corruption” at Montclair Kimberley Academy and the Montclair Art Museumʼs Yard School of Art. While he has participated in an impressive list of group and solo exhibitions, he claims—both modestly and mischievously—that he has little hope of achieving anything of societal value with his life.
